Environmental and energy researchers have come together and shared their knowledge in order to provide recommendations for the fulfillment of the United States’ climate vow.
The United States has set a challenging goal to cut back its greenhouse gas emissions by half by the year 2030. The question is, are they bound to succeed?
A new study from a group of researchers and policy specialists from across the US entails that there are various ways to achieve this goal. However, huge commitments have to be made, ASAP.
Nikit Abhyankar, the co-author and a Berkley Lab scientist in the Electricity and Policy Markets Department said this research should provide energy stakeholders and policymakers a level of peace of mind by showing everyone in the industry is gearing towards the same goal.
The case for green energy is so much stronger compared to a few years ago and this study shows that achieving the 50% reduced emissions goal can be made a reality by 2030, Abhyankar added. He also noted that the most immediate actions are going to be twice the renewable capacity created every year and propel the transition to electric vehicles in the next few decades.
Abhyankar stated that with the appropriate infrastructure and policies, the US’ emissions can be massively reduced while also allowing consumers to save billions and providing new and more employment opportunities.
Cutting back greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by the year 2030 is going to take the United States on a path that allows it to cap global warming to about 1.5°C. This target is crucial as it is a way to evade the worst and most devastating repercussions of the global climate crisis.
John Bistline, lead author, and program manager of Electric Power Research Institute’s Energy Systems and Climate Analysis Group stated that their study provides the very first comprehensive blueprint of how the US can achieve its end goal of 50% reduced GHG emissions by 2030. He added that this will require amping up efforts of diminishing carbon emissions and this goal is definitely achievable by the target date with the help of stakeholders from all sectors.
